Anxiety and Depression
With the weight of your responsibilities as a parent/parent-to-be, a partner, and all of the other things that you are responsible for, you are feeling overwhelmed. Maybe this pregnancy hasn’t turned out as you had hoped. Maybe caring for an infant(s) isn’t what you thought it would be. Anxiety and depression are hard enough to try and manage on their own, let alone adding into the mix a completely new phase of life– parenthood.
Trouble sleeping, racing thoughts, constant worry, brain fog, and irritability are all tale-tell signs that you might be experiencing perinatal anxiety. For some, this can start in pregnancy, and for others after delivery or in the first few months. Either way, anxiety can make you doubt yourself. You might feel like you are losing contact with who you once were. You may begin to feel disconnected and alone. Depression symptoms like tearfulness, loss of pleasure or joy, fatigue, and guilt begin to creep in. You don’t feel like your usual self and the negative self-talk digs you further into a hole – “I’m a bad mom” “‘Why do I feel this way, I shouldn't feel this way,” “I feel like I’m going crazy”. These thoughts can spiral and leave you sitting in shame and isolation.
Becoming a new mom is a lot. Really. It's a lot to adjust to, it's very understandable to feel overwhelmed. A part of you is motivated to stay hopeful, but sometimes it feels like the walls are closing in. It’s a lot. Your plate is full. And that is why more support is needed. Together, we can figure out a way to get you relief. You can learn how to give yourself grace and kindness and feel more confident in your transition to motherhood.
Remember, you are not broken or wrong. That is the anxiety/depression talking, not you. A part of you knows this isn’t the real, authentic you talking, and together we can silence that voice and amplify the real you, the empowered survivor. You are a mother. You have a beautiful maternal presence and on this journey to motherhood, you find yourself faced with obstacles and challenges, but you are strong, you are brave, you are resilient.
I’d like to offer you a safe space in which you can explore all the nuances of this journey. You are not alone, I am here with you and will guide you and hold your hand every step of the way. There is hope.
